1. Introduction
Albo took the G5.
An obscure reference from the film “Tropic Thunder” where Tom Cruise in the best role of his career I think as brutish Hollywood producer Les Grossman dangles the offer of a G5 jet in front of Hollywood agent Rick Peck played by Matthew McConaughey in return for betraying his client.
And Albo pulled up his big boy socks and became a play-uh - by taking one for the team and blaming the Jewish community property attacks enacted by paid local criminals employed by “overseas actors” on Iran.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps to be precise. Holed up in a bunker in Tehran studying closely images of a small deli on Bondi Beach.
Sure.
It sounds like political expediency to appease Israel and the US and to tamp down domestic unrest in Australia by blaming Iran. It’s the world of global geopolitics - the big boy’s club. It seems Albanese has taken the route of blaming Iran to please the US and Israel by way of “high politics”.
1.1 Why does it make sense to blame Israel?
Too many instances of timing make it expedient for Israel to have ordered a false-flag series of attacks: in the wake of Australia changing its vote at the UN, driving up antisemitism rhetoric in the run-up to an election with the hope of installing an Israel-friendly Liberal Prime Minister (who lost), forcing law changes to suppress free speech against Israel in the country
Why would Iran — specifically the IRGC in Tehran - bother to directly target a small Sydney business , then a synagogue - to “disrupt Australian social cohesion” ? It has nothing to gain from that. And everything to lose in terms of any sympathy the tyrannical regime had for its stance against Israel.
1.2 Why does it make sense to “blame” Iran?
The US and Israel are on a war footing looking for an excuse to attack Iran again and “finish the job”. A malevolent overseas action is a strong case for them.
Australian Diplomat Protection: the decision to invade Iran may already have been taken - in which case this gives a convenient excuse for evacuating Australian embassy staff and their families at short notice.
Palestinian Statehood: Israel is reinforcing that the fact Iran attacked Australia and was the principal backer of Hamas means that nobody should be pushing for Palestinian statehood, calling for Australia to reverse its decision. However - also puts pressure on other states.
Source of Intelligence: I had originally assumed that the intelligence would have come from the Five Eyes network - but in fact the intelligence implicating Iran came from none other than Israel.
Trump has markedly not met Albanese as yet and there is friction over the AUKUS deal. Likely there are negative discussions on tariff going on in the background. Favourable trade deals, AUKUS, and press likely to be a payoff for Albanese for blaming the attacks on the IRGC.
Israel has fallen out with Australia in a tit-for-tat public spat over Australian moving to recognise Palestinian Statehood. Netanyahu called Albanese a “weak leader”. This “act of strength” - in particular one pleasing Israel (and hence the US) - gets back in favour.
It appeases the Jewish community in Australia - with a vocal hostile lobby blaming Albanese for not addressing antisemitism and being slow to act on finding culprits. Revealing the culprit as a common enemy of Israel is a convenience to tamp down criticism.
It tries to simmer down anti-migrant / pro-Palestine protestor demonisation. Even though the actors in the Jewish property attacks were know to be paid criminals and nothing to do with migrants/pro-Palestine protestors - confirmation of a “common enemy” to the right-wing/pro-Israel protesters may simmer down sentiment (with the “March for Australia” coming up this weekend).
It silences the leaders of pro-Palestine protests: official groups cannot speak out and contradict ASIO findings no matter how utterly ridiculous they are. They are snookered into accepting the intelligence in their public statements and acting accordingly.
Tarnishes Critics: Former Foreign Minister Bob Carr had recently given an interview with OnePath network in which he specifically called out the pro-Israel lobby in Australia1. On the 3rd August March for Humanity on the Harbour Bridge Carr was pictured at the front with other lead protestors with a man holding a portrait of Khamenei behind him. Carr distanced himself but further images were produced of him meeting and consulting with Iranian leaders in a private capacity. Conveniently destroys Carr’s credibility.
Timing: A big announcement right now distracts from Israel’s appalling double-tap attack on Nasser Hospital2.
1.3 If Mossad WERE publicly blamed…
You can imagine anti-Israel sentiment in Australia would absolutely explode…
The case against Iran’s involvement is more compelling looking at the timing and motivations as evidence. Of course the “credible evidence” for Iran’s involvement will never be released.
2. The Background
In 2024 there were a number of targeted apparently antisemitic attacks on Jewish property both in Melbourne and in Sydney. This culminated in two major events - the firebombing of the Adass Synagogue in Melbourne on December 6th 2024 and the discovery of a caravan apparently full of explosives in New South Wales on January 19th 2025.
There was great outcry at the time - in the run up to an election and huge concessions made to the Jewish community at the time, law changes pushed through whilst police investigations were ongoing and demonisation of the pro-Palestine protestors fueled by the Murdoch Media in tandem with the pro-Israel lobby hysterically proclaiming “an antisemitism crisis”3.

Subsequently both plots were revealed as non-antisemitic in nature but carried out by paid criminal actors for money, paid by as yet unnamed “overseas actors”. The synagogue firebombing was specifically noted as “politically motivated”.
None of the law changes were repealed nor promises withdrawn nor apologies made for false accusations. Or come to think of it - has the “antisemitism crisis” rhetoric been scaled back.
Indeed - as protest has increased over Israel’s intensifying horrific actions in Gaza culminating in August’s protests with hundreds of thousands of people - positions are even more polarised.
3. The Announcement
On 26th August Prime Minister Albanese called a press conference and over the course of 20 minutes revealed that ASIO now had “credible evidence” that at least two of the attacks against Jewish property in Australia were in fact orchestrated by Iran - directly from Tehran by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). They said that most probably more attacks were also orchestrated by Iran - under investigation.
It was later revealed that the source of the intelligence implicating Iran was …. Israel.
The two attacks attributable to the IRGC were:
the Lewis Continental Kitchen in Sydney (October 20th 2024)
the Adass Synagogue in Melbourne (Dec 6th 2024)
The motive was said to be specifically to undermine social cohesion in Australia.
Australia in return would be:
expelling the Iranian Ambassador and his staff (though they were careful to point out that the Embassy itself was not involved)
temporarily shutting down Australia’s Embassy in Tehran (staff and their families were already out the country)
proscribing the IRGC as a terrorism organisation
asking all Australians to leave Iran and not to travel there
A huge emphasis was placed on the Jewish community - and Albanese ensured the previous day he had a large meeting and photo opportunity with students from the Australasian Jewish Union of Students (AJUS).
It just doesn’t stack up…

4. Stakeholders
Looking at the different parties involved here.
4.1 Israel
The Israel relationship was described as being “in tatters” with a recent verbal spat with Netanyahu over Australia’s announcement they would be supporting Palestinian statehood at the UN next month.
Netanyahu had furiously called Albanese a “weak leader” and wrote a letter giving him a fixed time 23 Sep 2025 - Jewish New Year - to resolve the “antisemitism crisis”.
He had also warned Albanese after Australia’s first December 2024 vote against Israel in the UN that Australia was “inviting terrorism to its shores” - two days before the Adass attack.
The action blaming Iran supports Israel as:
Netanyahu can say “told you so”
Netanyahu can say “we welcome his strong action” … rebuild relations
Israel and the US are planning to attack Iran imminently. This provides further “justification” of the broader threat posed by Iran in performing an attack
Israel can now make another argument against Palestinian statehood to all states announcing they would recognise at next month’s annual UN assembly. “Iran is now backing domestic terrorism in western countries - you could be next. And they are the primary backers of Hamas who rule Gaza - surely you cannot back statehood in this environment?”
Diverts attention from the atrocity at Nasser Hospital with the “double-tap” attack on journalists and rescue crews the previous day
4.2 Australian Jewish Community
Albanese was under major pressure from the Australian pro-Israel lobby to take action as the anti-Israel protests in Australia grew to massive proportions and were portrayed as being “terror rallies”.
The announcement was an appeasement of the community - “a direct assault on democracy and Jewish life… attempting to undermine social cohesion and sew discord in our community”
In announcing the responsibility of a major enemy of Israel he has given a foreign actor to vent hatred on - by the local pro-Israel lobby and right-wing extremists.
Rather than blaming pro-Palestine actors for such antisemitic attacks - though the ASIO Chief was at pains to note that not all attacks were under investigation as potentially politically motivated.
The hope would be that hatred of internal actors might be diverted elsewhere from the upcoming anti-migrant demonstrations this weekend - “March for Australia”.
Though that is not how the lobby see it. Saying that the attacks gave license to people in Australia to perform other copy-cat antisemitic attacks.
Furthermore - the involvement of Iran conveniently tarnishes the reputation of the March for Humanity marchers on 3rd August with the lead marchers pictured with a man behind them holding a portrait of Khamenei.
The non-sensical implication being that 300,000 people marching against Israel’s actions are somehow implicated by one guy (most probably a plant) holding this portrait4.
It also deflects from the criticism of the antisemitism envoy Jillian Segal who had just delivered a controversial report.
And diverts attention from next week’s “antisemitism summit” on the Gold Coast which has been accused of being a pro-Israel propaganda exercise.

4.3 Australian Pro-Palestinian Community
Potentially this would benefit the pro-Palestine community - much demonised by local elements - aiding “social cohesion”.
It also diverts from the suspicion and accusation of false-flag attacks on the Jewish community orchestrated by Israel to stir up support for the Jewish community and Israeli position.
If the attacks were confirmed as being by Mossad there would be an explosion of anger on the streets from the pro-Palestinian community.
The leaders of the pro-Palestine community need to suck it up and accept ASIOs official line that Iran was behind these attacks.
However - it gives argument to:
call bullshit on the “antisemitism” crisis that the pro-Israel lobby has been shouting about for two years
end special consideration for “antisemitism” including an organised “antisemitism summit” in the following week for 1000 local government officials - which is clearly yet another pro-Israel propaganda tour
review in more detail the definition of antisemitism applied and the statistics the lobby groups use to convince ministers there is / was a crisis
immediately repeal protest laws rushed in (twice in NSW) on the false premise that antisemitism was a crisis
The revelation that a third party overseas was behind the attacks - let’s call it Iran for now - rubbishes that claim and justifies the above steps.
However - NSW Premier Chris Minns doubled down in a statement on 26 August regurgitating that instances of antisemitism have increased dramatically last few years5.
4.4 US
Albanese in falling out with Israel and changing position on Palestine has attracted the venom of the US, notably one of the few foreign leaders not to meet with Trump.
Who knows what economic or other pressure behind the scenes here on Australia to take this line?
The Israel-pleasing line on Iran being behind the attacks also pleases the US and adds to the case for attacking Iran.
Expect Albanese to get his White House visit soon from the transactional President.
5. What’s more likely?
For the much more likely scenario - Israel as the perpetrator.
Israel provided the intelligence and had given Albanese the September deadline to “resolve the antisemitism crisis”. A more likely scenario is they released intelligence to ASIO purporting the culprits to be Iran and said that if the Australian Government didn’t announce this - it would undermine them by leaking this to the press globally - on or before the September 23rd deadline.
More broadly for Israel:
Israel relies on a strong pro-Israel lobby in Australia for support, knowing full well they have both sides of politics firmly under their influence and have done so for decades - the single exception being Gough Whitlam.
The Albanese Government has always been pro-Palestine - though their actions post October 7th may not have seen that way. Prior to October 7th they had been putting in a number of pro-Palestine changes to policy to the great chagrin of the local pro-Israel lobby.
In December 2024 the Albanese Government directed a yes vote in the UN as a first step to Palestinian statehood, breaking with decades of compliant Australian voting.
Netanyahu linked Australia’s UN position with “attracting terrorism to Australia’s shores” - and days later Adass Synagogue was bombed and a caravan with unprimed explosives towed into place in New South Wales. Both of these incidents plus virtually all NSW property attacks found to be hoax antisemitic attacks by paid criminals - by “overseas actors”.
It would have suited Israel to have a strongly supportive Liberal Prime Minister in Australia. With the election coming up in 2025 Peter Dutton visited Israel in July 2024 and worked on a media campaign with Murdoch outlets spruiking Israel friendly policy. An “explosion of antisemitism” fomented from these attacks gave Dutton a case to push Israel friendly policy that the Prime Minister was forced to echo.
However the gambit of an “antisemitism crisis” had failed.
Dutton lost the election and was indeed routed (however a win-win for the pro-Israel lobby with the “race to the bottom” Israel friendly policy promises locked in regardless).
As Israel’s violence spiralled, worldwide opinion was shifting against them, culminating in Australia’s decision to recognise Palestinian statehood.
Meanwhile the pro-Israel lobby was under a stack of pressure and the size and number of marches against Israel in Australia increased.
They won a legal case against an antisemitic Muslim cleric - but importantly and unexpectedly the judge gave a clear ruling differentiation in legal terms the difference between antisemitism and antizionism - as “philosophy or ideology”.
Meanwhile - journalist Antoinette Lattouf won her court case against the ABC - finding that the pro-Israel lobby had interfered directly and colluded with ABC executive management to effect her sacking for sharing a tweet positive for Palestine.
The pro-Israel lobby were exposed as being vindictive, law fare applying and manipulative through these cases - with other cases coming up against a journalist (Kostakidis) and two academics (Riemer and Haynes).
The antisemitism envoy Jillian Segal produces a 16 page report of pro-Israel propaganda designed to further stifle free speech - broadly criticised.
August it came to a head - a judge overturned a ruling banning humanitarian protest in Sydney - and almost 300,000 people marched across the harbour bridge. Two weeks later in 40 cities around the country hundreds of thousands also marched.
Right-wing elements in the country fanned by pro-Israel lobby demonisation of protestors as “terrorists” revived racist “Cronulla Riots” rhetoric and have organised a flag-waving “March for Australia” against immigrants at the end of August.
This is despite:
no pro-Palestine protestors being involved in the attacks on Jewish property
those attacks by criminals being motivated by financial gain - not terrorism and not because the targets were Jewish
perspective - terrible as these attacks were - it was property. There has been no physical attacks whatsoever. One woman dies in Australia every day from domestic violence by comparison - how much money is invested there?
opaque self-serving antisemitic statistics provided by pro-Israel organisations
actual political attacks being counted as antisemitic - when they are (illegal) protest against Israel: a restaurant in Melbourne owned by a GHF spokesperson, and a car outside the offices of an IDF arms supplier. The targeting is not because they are Jewish.
criticism of Israel being counted as “antisemitic” - both of events since October 7th and the long history before. To the UN Secretary General’s statement of fact in everyone’s minds October 2023 “it didn’t happen in a vacuum”.
pro-Palestine protestors being peaceful and from all walks of life: one or two bad eggs waving proscribed organisation flags are the media headlines but most can see through this selectiveness in a crowd of thousands (you would hope!)
So the initial attacks suited Israel at the time … hence the strong motivation for a Mossad-backed attack. It didn’t work out… relations plummeted…. as did the reputation of the pro-Israel lobby as Israel’s behaviour worsened….
In this climate Albo had to have been strong-armed into saying it was Iran for all the pro-Israel benefits above.
6. The Big Boys Club
It’s tough at the top. There’s some official secrets you take to your grave. Wonder if this is Albo’s “big boy” moment of power politics?
I reckon Trump used a massive amount of leverage on Albanese to force him to accept the “Iran did it line” … negotiated through someone slightly more diplomatic than Trump himself.
In return - favourable trade terms, visit to the White House, restoration of relations a promise from Mossad not to do it again.
Back to the movie Tropic Thunder.
Taking “the G5” scene almost word for word and substituting Donald Trump for Hollywood Producer Les Grossman, Steve Witkoff for his sycophantic sidekick and Anthony Albanese for the honourable Hollywood agent being strong-armed by Grossman6:
Trump: The universe is talking to us right now. You just gotta listen.
[Trump is playing “Low” by “Flow Rida” and he and Witkoff begin dancing. Albo is confused.]
Trump: See, this is the good part, Albo. This is when the job gets fun.
Witkoff: Mmm, yeah.

Trump: You play ball, we play ball. [Witkoff nods. Trump begins dancing like he's slapping ass.] I know you want the goodies. Mmm!

Trump: You payin' attention? 'Cuz I'm talkin' G5 Albo. That's how you're gonna roll. No more frequent flyer bitch miles for my boi. Oh yeah. Playa. Playa. Big dick playa.
Witkoff: Swingin' past your knees.
Trump: Big dick, baby.
Witkoff: Yup.

Trump: Or, you can grow a conscience in the next five minutes and see where that takes you.
[Albo stands up and faces Trump.]
Albo: Let me get this straight. You want me to take credible intelligence that Mossad did these false-flag attacks in Australia and blame it on Iran for some money and a G5?
Trump: Yes.
Albo: A G5 airplane.
Trump: Yes. And lots of money. Playa.... [Trump starts the music again, and he and Witkoff start dancing again.]
Witkoff: Yeah! Smack it up, flip up, rub it down, hoo!!
G5 Playuh.
A far cry from that young Labor MP on Martin Place in Sydney with a loudspeaker standing up for the Palestinians and actually calling out Israel.
