Fifty Years Ago, the UN Told the Truth About Zionism.
The 1975 resolution that vanished — and what that silence still protects.
Summary
The 10th November 2025 marks 50 years since the UN passed a motion on the floor calling out a truth - that zionism is a form of racism and racial discrimination.
Pro-Israel lobbies celebrate the fact that it was rescinded 15 years later as if “the world came to its senses” - but the real story shatters that fairy tale.

1. Introduction
10th November 2025 is the 50th Anniversary of UN Resolution 3379 which CORRECTLY equated Zionism as Racism - unlike the view of the Zionist Federation of Australia who marked the anniversary of course proposing the UN “FALSELY” equated this in their resolution1.
We all know Israel is going full damage control and PR blitz whilst the tenuous ceasefire is in place to try to normalise the state.
However, after two years of Israel’s genocide in Gaza live streamed across the world - showing the brutality of the effects of Israel’s political Zionism to be a clear truism to all with eyes - I’d probably have left this one off the hasbara plan….
There’s a lot more to this fairy tale of the world suddenly recognising Israel’s good intent in 1991. Far from it.
2. What the resolution said & the vote
The resolution stated the obvious - to call out racism and apartheid of states such as Israel and South Africa and to call out Israel’s aggressive behaviour on the world stage2.
as South Africa … policy aimed at repression of the dignity and integrity of the human being
Non-Aligned UN Bloc declaration a few months prior that “Zionism is a threat to world peace and security”
Called upon all countries to oppose this racist and imperialist ideology
Sound familiar?
This isn’t “UN bias” - it’s a reaction to observable and recognised behaviour - as with Gaza today.
Here is the actual vote on the resolution in days of more basic technology:
🎥 Inst video: Actual footage from the UN in 1975 of the vote
Notably Iran voted with the resolution - under the Shah 4 years before the Islamic Revolution. The same Shah in 1947 voted against recommending partitioning Palestine predicting it would “lead to generations of violence”3. Though Iran recognized Israel quickly later they had also voted against their admission to the UN in 1949.
Point being - Israel claims some sort of Iranian alliance before the Islamic revolution - it was a working relationship of convenience but even Imperial Iran voted against injustice where it mattered.
As the Iranian delegate proved in 1975 with a “oui” supporting the resolution that Zionism is racism.
Incidentally, as a symbolic pushback on this, Israel renamed UN Boulevard in the port-city of Haifa to be “Zionism Boulevard”. This greatly angered the local populace at the time in particular since the people living on this street were mostly Israeli Arabs (“equality for all in Israel” anyone?).4
In 2001 the Arab population had a petition to change the name back to the pre-1948 original name of the Arab district to “El Jabel” (The Mountain) but this clearly wasn’t done5.
3. Rescinded - but not because it wasn’t true
The ZFA article went on to note that the 1975 resolution 3379 was rescinded and overturned 15 years later in 1991 - as if to note some sort of noble milestone.
Far from it - Israel’s behaviour had not changed - and it was merely a political deal - and even that Israel never intended to honour.
In 1990 Iraq invaded Kuwait and was pushed back by a “Coalition of the Gulf” led by President Bush Senior. After pushing back Iraq it was clear that US oil interests would need protected in the region with increased military ties and alliances leveraging Israel.

In this climate Bush Snr organised a 1991 “peace summit” in Madrid with various Gulf players, the Palestinians also inviting Israel.
However Israeli Prime Minister Shamir refused to attend the summit UNLESS the long-troubling UN 3379 resolution was rescinded6.
This was done - a political move pushed by Bush Snr. rather than any sudden change in what is even more clearly seen to be the truth today after Israel’s genocide in Gaza was live streamed across the world.
Incidentally Israel has pulled this concessions for peace in the Gaza genocide with calculating motives. This time after attacks on Hezbollah in Lebanon in late 2024. In November 2024 there were ceasefire talks in play and for historical reasons Macron of France wished to aid the talks. Netanyahu refused to let Macron be involved… UNLESS … he promised that France would give up it’s obligations under the ICC Rome Statute and not arrest him7.
But Israel’s manipulation in 1991 didn’t stop there.
Though Shamir did attend the conference, little progress was made. And no wonder - after securing the removal of the black mark of Resolution 3379, Shamir later admitted after leaving office that his strategy was to drag out the Washington negotiations for ten years, by which time the annexation of the West Bank would be an accomplished fact…8
And who was his partner in crime in this strategy?
A younger Israeli spokesman. Benjamin Netanyahu.
4. Australian uber-lobbyists
The ZFA go on to mention “Australia’s role in rescinding” this. As a a co-sponsor of the motion to rescind, true to a certain extent but only to be expected as a member of the Coalition of the Gulf fighting in the war. However the ZFA mention PM Bob Hawke and Foreign Minister Bill Heyden leading international efforts to rescind.
This is true - lobbying on behalf of Israel (even if it was ultimately unsuccessful in that it took a diplomatic bribe to rescind the motion ultimately).
What they don’t mention is the leaked speaking notes from the Australia uber-lobbyist Mark Leibler on the subject where he notes how he specifically targeted Heyden to get him onside, rather than Hawke.

5. Whitlam - none of your sh*t
Whitlam voted against 3379 in 1975 - but what else did Whitlam do? Whitlam was only following in his words the express policy of Australian Governments to remain neutral.
This is true… but my god, could the lobby have picked a worse name to invoke?
What they would prefer to forget is an incident two years earlier after the Yom Kippur War.
Whitlam revealed a true story of Australian pro-Israel lobby undue influence in a 1985 book launch years later. This was the only time in history essentially (until very recently say 2024) that the influence of the lobby was called out in public. And what a place - the National Press Club of Australia at the launch of a book on his time in Government. It caused as much furore as Vanessa Redgrave’s famous 1978 Oscar acceptance speech calling out interference by “Zionist Hoodlums” in that arena.
Whitlam said that he faced “blackmail and coercion by members of the Jewish community in Australia” who had lobbied and pressured the Government to take Israel’s side on Yom Kippur dealings in the United Nations Security Council, where Australia was in the Chamber and happened to be the Chair that month.
Entirely inappropriate for one - underhand - and blackmail?

6. Today: Israel’s behaviour continues as does the uncontrolled international lobbying
Remember the pressure Whitlam alluded to over Yom Kippur was 52 years ago … why was an unregistered charity, not listed at lobbyist, acting so blatantly on behalf of a foreign nation?
One might ask exactly the same question right now of the Australian pro-Israel lobby - after two years of supporting the genocide, reproducing IDF hasbara and silencing pro-Palestinian voices at every opportunity and getting the foot in the door at the most senior levels of Government always citing “antisemitism” - all on behalf of Israel.
Why are they not taken to task? In particular as essentially locally enablers acting as “excusers” for the horror we’ve seen.
The Royal Commission Australia desperately needs. Not that the Prime Minister Albanese who stewarded the genocide is likely to call this. Turkeys don’t vote for Christmas.
In the meantime, the Australian pro-Israel lobby might have been better marking the Australian Racial Discrimination Act9 ironically implemented in Australia under Whitlam’s Government also in 1975 just as the rest of the world were calling out Israel for being racists themselves10.
Epilogue: Gough Whitlam’s Dismissal
Gough Whitlam has the unenviable record of being the only Prime Minister in Australian history to be dismissed by the supposed figurehead Governor-General over the inability of supply.
In the US - this is routine and does not result in the removal of a President / Leader of the House - in fact at the time of writing the longest Government shutdown in US history is reaching its fifth week….
But the timing of Gough’s dismissal is also interesting.
The vote in the UN for the Zionism is Racism motion was 10th November 1975 which the Australian voted for with the US.
The very next day 11th November 1975 Gough was sacked by the Governor General.
But the Australian Pro-Israel lobby ensured that the vote counted from their nemesis and were careful to note this.
