1. Minns: It’s a long game
We need to talk about Australian New South Wales State Premier Chris Minns.
In Australia there have been a spate of apparent antisemitic incidents targeting the Jewish community that have been under investigation with the police expressing doubts on the actual motives and actors - now proven to be a hoax. There are also disturbing correlations between the timing of the attacks and the political actions of the Australian Government discussed in Appendix B: Australia’s United Nations voting record and the timing of attacks.
Regardless - Minns jumped the gun and introduced laws suppressing free speech - claiming “we can’t wait”. This is despite being briefed and in contact with the police and being aware that there was more to the incidents than targeted antisemitic attacks.
Shortly after the law changes - the police announced the incidents were not ideologically motivated and were by paid criminals orchestrated by an “overseas actor” tbc.
Minns actions moving quickly to push an agenda suppressing free speech (read: protest against Israel’s actions) would be suspect at best - but his bias is beyond doubt when seen in context.
He did exactly the same in 2023 with a premature law change during a police investigation, based on information that was shortly afterwards proven to be false - actually reprimanding one of his own MPs for suggesting he wait for the outcome.
Minns has been attending gala dinners and events hosted by pro-Israel lobby organisations at particularly insensitive times making speeches glorifying Israel.
And more tellingly - early in his career he was selected for the very first AIJAC paid lobby trip to Israel with other “up and coming leaders”1. The lobby target junior staffers or political administrators early in their career with a view to cultivating relationships and Israel advocacy long-term.
Amongst other attendees on this inaugural trip were Scott Morrison and Bill Shorten - whose future advocacy records for Israel speak for themselves.
These trips are on public record - what we don’t see is “quid pro quo” along the way cementing in that pro-Israel support.
Already looking down the track
Whilst we are looking elsewhere - you can be sure that AIJAC will be doing the same right now - with a targeted list of “prospects” to take on these initial trips for the long-term future - media, public figures, student leaders, union leaders and of course politicians.
Peter Costello attended a paid trip to Israel whilst a student leader decades ago. In 2005 a student leader Varun Ghosh was selected by AIJAC to attend a paid trip to Israel.2
In February 2024 Ghosh became a Senator for Western Australia. And has voted consistently against motions for Gaza3.
It’s a long game.
2. Minns: A history
An examination of Chris Minns’s actions during the Gaza crisis with additional context and his attitudes to the pro-Israel lobby over time.

3. Minns in 2025: Pushing through laws suppressing free speech on incorrect information: second time
Dec 5 2024: A caravan is found dumped on the side of the road in New South Wales, Australia. Two days later when it is still there a Dural local tows it to his yard.
updated Dec 10 2024: The Australian Federal Police are allegedly are told of the location of the caravan with explosives - but only six weeks later do NSW Police discover the caravan… Fast forwarding (*spoiler!*) this is according to a criminal on the run who alleges he made a deal with the AFP to get explosives off the street in order for amnesty to come home to see his son. He denies any knowledge of the other staged attacks or the fake antisemitic note found in the caravan.
Jan 14 2025: Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus makes a visit to Israel to “mend relationships” with the Israeli Government. This is in relation to Netanyahu’s furious response to Australia voting for a Palestine State at the UN in December - when he linked their vote to antisemitism in Australia, and warned of terrorism (just before the Adass synagogue attack - see Appendix B: Australia’s United Nations voting record and the timing of attacks).
Many questions are raised on the appropriateness of the visit - in particular as Australia’s highest legal officer - due to Israel’s actions in Gaza and the open ICC arrest warrant for Netanyahu.4
Jan 19 2025: The police become involved. The property owner breaks the padlock on the caravan and finds there are explosives - which turn out to be 40 year old mining charges with no detonator - and a crudely written note threatening Jewish sites in Sydney.
The caravan is reported to police by the property owner. Police keep investigation under wraps since the orchestration is clearly suspicious but a few days later they disseminate information that criminals may be involved for gain rather than ideological purposes.
NSW Premier Chris Minns is informed of the investigation at that point.
Jan 21 - The Prime Minister convenes a National Cabinet to discuss “the antisemitism epidemic”. He announces a new national antisemitism database5.
Jan 23 - NSW Police arrest more people in connection with apparently antisemitic incidents6. Clearly these are an unusual demograph of petty criminal with previous convictions and do not appear ideologically motivated by overseas events.
Jan 29 - The caravan incident is leaked to the Daily Telegraph newspaper. The police are forced to then go public7. They announce the caravan incident - and that the scene is suspicious and they are maintaining an open mind - noting the earlier warning of “overseas actors”.
Police also announce that three people have already been arrested in connection with the incident - and furthermore
a) one was already in custody charged with an antisemitic graffiti attack in Sydney and
b) that person was the owner of the caravan.
At this early stage - there was clearly more to the incident - and certainly not related to anyone protesting Israel’s actions in Gaza.
Regardless - Minns immediately declares it to be a terrorist incident. Note that only police can formally declare this for additional powers - as they did following the Adass Synagogue arson in Melbourne - which is still an open investigation three months later even with the additional resources.
Jan 31 - Channel 7 broadcasts a sensationalist news report with childlike graphics showing a caravan blowing up in the Sydney CBD outside the Great Synagogue8. Incredibly irresponsible deliberately fomenting panic for clicks.
Feb 6 - Mandatory minimum sentencing laws for “hate crimes” are pushed through Federal Parliament. Peter Dutton with the assistance of long term Israel advocate Senator Paterson pushes through tougher amendments.
Noting this in parallel with a push for the IHRA definition of antisemitism to be more broadly applied - which can define criticism of Israel as hate speech.
To take a step back to see what is happening here at this point.
The pro-Israel lobby are playing both sides of politics in one-upmanship - taking advantage of the time pressure in an upcoming election - for a portrayed “national emergency” issue.
There is a win here either way no matter who wins the election. The definition of antisemitism is being broadened to potentially include criticism of Israel in parallel with the introduction of mandatory minimum sentencing for such crimes.
Net result - making criticism of Israel potentially illegal and at least scrutinised in the future much more closely, erring on caution.
Feb 8 - Ironic tweet from the President of the ZFA to Caitlin Johnstone - with a brilliantly accurate response9.
Feb 10 - Sky News Sharri Markson and ECAJ Co-CEO Alex Ryvchin announce in the “environment of an explosion of antisemitic attacks” they will be hosting their own “antisemitism summit” showcasing Opposition Leader Peter Dutton who has been feting the pro-Israel lobby for months in the run up to an election announcement, including a visit to Israel to meet the President on 30th July 2024.
On the same day Dutton met the President Israeli civilians stormed an IDF military jail and were allowed to release IDF soldiers who had raped Palestinian prisoners. An Israeli lawmaker then actually went on record defending the Israeli soldiers right to rape the prisoners.10
I would imagine this was not a topic of discussion.
Feb 10 - The Australian Federal police investigating the Dural caravan incident informs the NSW State Police that the plot was “fake terrorism” and the motive was criminal but not antisemitic. Incredibly - the NSW Officer informed was forced to sign an NDA not to pass that information on. This was unusual … but likely a precaution not to alert the criminals after the earlier leaks.
Feb 13 - Yet ANOTHER Parliamentary “Friends of Israel” parliamentary network is quietly launched - bringing the total of these groups in Federal and State Parliaments to a stupifying THIRTEEN.
The Federal Parliament Australia-Israel Allies Caucus was relaunched on February 13th in Canberra, Chaired by Senator Andrew Wallace11 with guest speaker Israeli Ambassador Amir Maimon.
Several times during the speech Australia’s “antisemitism crisis” was mentioned as a driver for the creation of such groups.
AIAC is an ideologically driven Christian group - which is a concern in a supposedly secular Australian Government
It would appear The Australian relaunch is part of a global relaunch of “faith-based diplomacy” groups into Governments throughout the world - noting a similar launch on Capitol Hill in a few weeks earlier in January 2025 - “Congressional Israel Allies Caucus”12. For more on the AIAC see here.
Feb 17 - Minns declares an “emergency situation, we can’t wait” - and pushes through laws which suppress free speech. Despite being in the loop on the police investigation and it being abundantly clear that other factors are at play.
Feb 20 - The laws pass the lower house and are debated in the Legislative Council. Someone I am loathe to quote - an abrasive, homophobic individual - is independent Mark Latham. However, on this occasion he quite rightly calls out the lobby in the debate:
“I have often contemplated why did former Labor Premier Bob Carr flip from his ironclad support for Israel at Labor conferences. No-one spoke with greater passion, conviction and effectiveness than Bob Carr. But he flipped, I think, on the basis that perhaps the lobby group exercises too much power.
While their cause is noble, they can have too much power in the political system. They bring to bear funding mechanisms and media influence that is not necessarily in the public interest, particularly when it is manifest in legislation like this. The Hon. John Ruddick gave a very fine speech. I hope I have been worthy of his words in saying I too oppose the bill.”
Bob Carr was the former NSW Premier, and former Gillard-era Foreign Secretary - notably the only elder statesman in Australia who has stood up to and called out the lobby (apart from former Prime Minister Gough Whitlam at a 1985 press conference) .
On the debate, there were various other voices of dissent and Hansard from that day is an interesting read13. However, the Bill was passed and received royal assent shortly after.

Feb 20 - Sky News showcase the “antisemitism summit” featuring a cast of current and former Liberal MPs but claiming bipartisanship with Labor Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus in attendance (who is heckled).
Strong imagery with Peter Dutton in a kippah followed by a white-suited Markson walking on stage in front of a large Israeli flag.
Feb 21: It is announced there will be a NSW Parliamentary Committee to examine antisemitism in NSW14. This is done at the drop of a hat - noting the “social cohesion” element of the wording; and cart-before-the-horse laws already changed an in place. The hearing calls for submissions by 6 April ahead of headings May and June.
Feb 22: Minns hosts a Press Conference defending the new legislation on hate speech - quoting the fact there had been “700 instances of antisemitic attacks over the summer”. The figures Minns quoted were vastly overstated and incorrect as revealed at a Parliamentary Inquiry six weeks later on 7 Apr after the hoax was revealed15. Minns’s figures:
Minn’s figures were in fact ALL racially motivated incidents over the period
Only 41% or 329 incidents were antisemitic
And the question needs to be asked - who provided those statistics? If they were from pro-Israel lobby groups - what definition was being used (criticism of Israel?) and who verified the data?
Feb 23 - Markson and Rvychin publish a 15 point plan to “combat antisemitism” post the summit with #1 on the plan highlighting the caravan incident and calling for a national emergency to be declared against “antisemitic terrorism”. The plan is presented to the Liberals and Labor for endorsement ahead of the upcoming election.
Feb 25 - Australian Universities announce they finally be introducing the IHRA definition of antisemitism to the campus after months of pressure. The announcement is portrayed in the media as a natural protection in the “emergency environment”.
Feb 28 - Liberal Shadow Minister Mark Tehan makes a policy announcement that if the Coalition is elected - it will introduce an antisemitism component to the Citizenship Test.16
It is surprising this has not had more coverage. There was considerable pushback when Germany - a country with an understandable special obligation or staatsräson to Israel17 - introduced such a test to its citizenship ceremonies. But for Australia? Why the exceptionalist obligation without that historical context to even be admitted as an Australian citizen?
Mar 8 - Peter Dutton agrees to adopt the Sky/pro-Israel lobby “antisemitism plan” and declare a national emergency on antisemitism due to the “antisemitism terror” situation if he is elected.
He should probably have waited one more day.
Mar 9 - The police make a major announcement contextualising the “attacks”. The actors were criminal enterprise, a hoax and not antisemitic. Multiple arrests for not just the caravan but a large number of other incidents also revealed to be hoaxes. The people behind it - overseas actors - are still to be identified.18
Post this debacle Sky News, the pro-Israel lobby groups, Peter Dutton, Senator Paterson, the Prime Minister and of course NSW Premier Chris Minns are all heavily criticised for exaggerating and taking advantage of the situation for political gain and benefit to the pro-Israel lobby.
Does it matter? The politicians (temporarily) have egg on their faces - but the laws are in place and electoral promises made by both sides. Mission accomplished.
Update: as at 15th March 2025 - Police have indicated that despite not having made arrests as yet - the Melbourne Synagogue attacks also does not appear to be associated with extremist groups. See update in Epilogue 2 - Update on the Melbourne Synagogue Attacks.
So the hysteria from the firebombing of a synagogue, a caravan filled with explosives - happening just as Australia pissed off Netanyahu with a UN vote and in the lead up to an election - by paid actors.
Stinks to high heaven.
Update: “Overseas actor” identified - but deny broader involvement other than the caravan
Updated 26 June:
NSW Police believed they had identified the “overseas actors” involved in orchestrating the NSW antisemitic property attacks - to be Sayit Akca.
Akca gave an interview to the ABC on 4th May in hiding in Turkey where he said that he had made one deal with police to deliver a caravan full of explosives to get them off the streets in return for being allowed to return to Australia to see his son19.
He denied any knowledge of the broader antisemitic property attacks in NSW nor of the antisemitic note planted in the caravan.
He also said he had been dealing with the Australian Federal Police and advised them of the caravan’s location on 10th December 2024 - and yet the NSW Police did not discover this until six weeks later on 19th January 2025.
It is still unclear who orchestrated the antisemitic elements or if Akca is telling the truth since the ABC also mention he had texted the ABC with a tip just prior to the caravan being discovered in January saying it was “related to the Israelis”. How would he know this if he wasn’t involved in the bigger plot?
Regardless… something isn’t adding up with the “overseas actor” and overall timing of the attacks (see Appendix B: Australia’s United Nations voting record and the timing of attacks).
4. Minns in 2024: Continuing to suppress protest and celebrating Israel whilst Gaza burns
February - Crikey publishes an article calling out Chris Minn’s bias against people protesting Israel’s actions in NSW and against his own public servants.
In February he wrote an all-staff letter to public servants asking them not to speak out on the issue after 300 public servants and MPs signed an open letter protesting Australia’s supply of arms to Israel20.
Meanwhile Minns continued to speak out himself advocating Israel’s position.21
March - Police arrest peaceful protestors with red food dye on their hands. One of Minn’s own Labor MPs makes a speech complaining at the heavy handed approach of police - and Minns sees the opportunity to remove a voice of dissent and immediately sacks him.22
May 30th - Chris Minns gives a gushing speech at Israel Independence Day Gala Dinner at a particularly heightened period when in fact Israel was firebombing refugee camps in Rafah. This was the first time this had happened and horrific - some measure of distance would have been appropriate.
5. Minns in 2023: Opera house precedent and first case of pushing through suppression of free speech laws
Oct 8 - Minns immediately authorises the Opera House sails to be lit in the colours of the Israeli flag - a complete precedent.
This is also despite the obvious retribution that was coming.
Minns defended his decision even as statements of pending destruction and war crimes from Israeli leaders were made so telling that the ICJ later used them as evidence to indicate intent to progress with the ongoing genocide case.
Oct 9 - An independent mob - not part of the organised pro-Palestine protestors who were marching from elsewhere - chant antisemitic slurs at the Opera House.
The question is over whether the word “gas” was used - which seems like a small point but has legal ramifications never mind Holocaust-evoking connotations. A far-right pro-Israel organisation captions the audio “gas” and the video goes viral - giving the organisation great publicity.
This audio of this segment is later found to be false and the caption faked - but has great ramifications - as the slur is heavily leveraged to silence voices protesting Israel’s actions, justify Minn’s law changes and is broadcast almost wall to wall on Australian media. As below.
Oct 10 - the Israeli Ambassador to Australia echoes the Israeli leadership’s sinister words and calls Palestinians “animals” on live television. Nobody in Government or the media calls him out on this.
Nov 21 - despite continued questions on the veracity of the recordings at the Opera House Minns announces he will be pushing through law changes in Parliament to impact free speech.23
Dec 4 - Minns slaps down one of his own MPs for suggesting that the opera house footage “gas the jews” may not have been what was said and they should wait for police investigation into the audio to be completed.24
Elsewhere journalists are sacked for proposing the same.
Dec 14 - On the last sitting day of Parliament, Minns pushes through laws tightening free speech whilst the investigation is ongoing.
Feb 2 (2024)- Police confirm that “gas the jews” was not said.
6. Minns in 2022: Another Israel speech
Minns makes another speech on Israel as leader of NSW Opposition at a gala dinner. In attendance is the now antisemitism envoy Jillian Segal in her then capacity as CEO of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry.
The prior year during 2021 Operation Guardian of the Walls another Israeli assault on Gaza Segal said at rally in support of Israel “we must drive out anti-Zionism and antisemitism” indicating her conflation of the two. Israel’s assault then killed 274 Palestinians and injured 7000 and the rally was held for same reason as rallies during the Gaza crisis - to orchestrate community support for Israel’s actions.
Segal has also made controversial statements during the war and has long been pushing for IHRA at universities - which was pushed through in February prior to the announcement of the NSW hoax.
Amazingly even with her blatantly pro-Israel bias the Government appointed her antisemitism envoy in July 2024. This was a rushed appointment with zero parliamentary scrutiny for a role with a large staff, budget and unprecedented access and influence - all on the taxpayer dollar.
7. Minns in 2003: AIJAC lobby initial Israel trip
Minns attends the first ever AIJAC lobby paid trip to Israel - with Scott Morrison and Bill Shorten. All early in their careers, identified and targeted by the lobby as “upcoming leaders”.
The rest as they say is history - in particular for Scott Morrison.
8. Conclusion
Minns clearly has a long association with key figures in the pro-Israeli lobby and has indisputably shown bias towards silencing voices in NSW speaking out against Israel’s actions in Gaza.
Then after the hoax antisemitism debacle he finally said the quiet bit out loud.
Minns was back up defending his decision on the free speech law changes on Tuesday 17th March, expecting the usual reasons to be given.
But then he came out and said it.
“[Australians] don’t have the same freedom of speech laws that they have in the United States, and the reason for that is that we want to hold together a multicultural community,”25
So regardless of the motivation of the “spate of antisemitic attacks” with him champing at the bit to change laws on a whim - he feels it was justified to push through because of his perceived view of the structure of society.
I’d say - WTF …. but this is exactly what we knew all along.26
Minns’s prejudice against multiculturalism and blatant pro-Israel bias developed over a long time has led him to force through these laws.
It clearly explains his behaviours and attitudes.
He has to go.
But what about the lobby behind him?
When the politicians themselves are compromised by foreign influence - who can intervene? Not our Attorney-General that is for sure - whose department is meant to register entities exerting influence on behalf of foreign countries.
A Royal Commission is needed into the influence of the pro-Israel lobby on our Government, media and broader society with a view to rooting it out.
If you silence voices of dissent you enable the genocide - simple as that.
The Australian Government - State and Federal - can never again be manipulated to be complicit in such a horror as that of Gaza.
Epilogue: After the police hoax revelation - subsequent events
There is a clear continuation of behaviour in the runup to the election.
The pro-Israel lobby fueled by the Murdoch Press are hysterical in insisting that the attacks - paid or not - are still purely antisemitic.
Which goes against any definition of antisemitism or racism where an action is motivated by ideological reasons prejudiced against a certain group. Ideology ain’t cash.
There has been great outcry against Minns’s law changes - noting the exact reason they were forced through under false pretences.
NSW Parliamentary Inquiry
An NSW Parliamentary Inquiry into the affair was voted to occur proposed by MP Rod Roberts27. However - this will just examine the timing of information and not whether the laws introduced under false pretences should be rolled back, as was the expectation of Senator John Ruddick28.
Though the inquiry will take a month, any such subsequent repeal action you can be sure will run waaaaaay beyond the election whilst the laws stay in place29.
Convenient.
Update 9th April 2025:
Revelations have been coming out on what Minns did and did not know in the run up to the law changes - many quite shocking from the 7 Apr transcript30 and subsequent reporting. I’ve updated in the body of this article.
Legal Challenge to law changes
Meanwhile the law changes are being challenged privately in court by the Sydney co-ordinating body for pro-Palestine protests, the Palestine Action Group31. The challenge is due to be heard on 8th April - unclear how long a ruling would take … again past the election?
Silencing media voices
The lobby are continuing to silence media voices, with action taken against journalist Mary Kostakidis on 31st March 2025 by the Zionist Federation of Australia32.
This is for reproducing and commenting on a tweet from assassinated Hezbollah leader last year - but will open up a broader legal discussion on the use of the term “from the river to the sea” - clearly the calculation by the ZFA.
However - this offers an opportunity to broaden the exposure of the lobby themselves. Interestingly they are using the family law firm for the action. This in itself exposes the multiple conflicts of interest of the actors involved - with the same people in the law firm also lobbying the Government on behalf of the “antisemitism explosion”. They enjoy access to the upmost levels of Government - whilst effectively lobbying for Israel as the definition antisemitism is quietly changed in the background.

The Australian Election: political Pork-barreling
The May 3rd 2025 election is so critical because the pro-Israel lobby have already exacted so much out of both parties in terms of promises around antisemitism. Remember - this is as antisemitism is being broadly redefined as criticism of Israel.
If Dutton gets in all bets are off. He is now living the #TemuTrump dream and following Trump’s outrageous push to silence pro-Palestine voices so you can be sure there will be pressure on any outstanding actions to repeal State laws such as that Minns introduced.
Another interesting development is the promises exacted both by Dutton and Albanese on the Adass Synagogue fire - cause as yet unproven with a Federal and State task force three months later.
Questions are being asked why this guarantee of grant to rebuild. The building was insured33 and a fundraiser raised $2.2M (March 19 2025) over the insurance cost supported by some huge corporates34.
So why such a huge grant in addition funded by the Australian taxpayer? A Does a building cost what $50M? Shouldn’t insurance and replacement budget as for the rest of us cover like-for-like?
In addition previously between Oct 13 2023 and 11 Dec 2024, the Australian Federal Government has provided around $110M of project funding to the Jewish community, plus State project funding. And on top of that various Federal, State and even Council benefit payments to traumatised individuals (see Appendix C: Government community funding and support summary).
The project funding includes a $32.5M community grant for ECAJ announced the day after the firebombing by the Prime Minster together with the formation of a dedicated Federal and State task force to find the perpetrators (zero arrests to date).
The taxpayer-funded pledges for Adass rebuild on top of previous generous grants when funds have already been raised for Adass just doesn't make sense.
The Jewish Council of Australia issued a media release on the uncovering of the caravan hoax35. They called out succinctly the weaponisation of fear and political point scoring at the expense of the Jewish Community throughout the whole affair. This extends their earlier call against singling out antisemitism as a separate exceptionalist hate crime in order to attain that social cohesion rather than the perception of one special interest group.
This is an extension of the Jewish “community leaders” - expressing extreme support for all Israel’s policies - claiming the represent a whole community as a monolith, which is not the case. Again this weaponises the community for political gain.
Unconscionable.
Negative consent - update post-election
And so - the election results came in - within two hours of the final booths closing in Western Australia. It was an absolute landslide for Labor.
Against the pro-Israel lobby pushing Peter Dutton all the way, extracting promise after promise - but having to settle for what Albanese also promised in the bidding game.
But hey - let’s just reconfirm publicly what you promised, just to be on the safe side. The tweet below put out by the ZFA shortly after Dutton conceded with this slide towards the back of a long prepped message.36

New New South Wales Premier?
On 20th March there was an appalling online threat to a mosque in Western Sydney. The Premier’s office hastily put out a tweet with a brief statement condemning the incident - with a Freudian slip in the first version.
Or was a duplicitous aide trying to tell Minns the writing was on the wall…?
You can bet the pro-Israel lobby are already looking at their contacts on the NSW Labor front benches.
Perhaps a shift to the Legislative Assembly for Treasurer Daniel Moohkey, fresh from a 2024 paid lobby trip to Israel?
Epilogue 2 - Update on the Melbourne Synagogue Attacks
On 15th March 2025 Police have indicated that despite not having made arrests as yet - the Melbourne Synagogue attacks also does not appear to be associated with extremist groups37.
So the hysteria from the firebombing of a synagogue, a caravan filled with explosives and a flurry of graffiti attcks are ALL non-extremist acts - not antisemitic or ideology driven.
Criminals have been arrested in Sydney, Melbourne its just a matter of time - homes were raided and searched early June as the investigation progresses38.
This happens
just as Australia pisses off Netanyahu in the UN by voting with the rest of the world against the occupation
all in the lead up an election
By criminal elements paid by “overseas actors”.
Stinks to high heaven.
Appendix A: NSW Parliament: Pro-Israel bodies
In the debate on Chris Minn’s Feb 2025 bills rushed through Parliament due to an “antisemitism emergency” - even as the suspicious circumstances of the hoax criminal attacks were being investigated - Mark Latham mentioned the power of the pro-Israel lobby as a pressure point on Minns’s capitulation.
His language noted “whilst their cause is noble” - which I disagree with - but what could he say?
The modus operandi of the lobby is to conflate anti-zionism with antisemitism, and/or in this case pump up claims of antisemitism (whilst extremely suspicious). The net result is an appearance of a noble cause - in order to garner sympathy from the Government - and using that access at the topmost ministerial levels under false pretences (call it a Trojan Horse) to leverage influence.
A bit of a tall order to call out the lobby in the house, even with parliamentary privilege - in particular when so many “honourable members” are in the Parliamentary Friends of Israel Groups with many having taken AIJAC paid trips to Israel themselves.
There are ELEVEN “Friends of Israel” groups across Federal and State Parliaments. In the NSW Parliament alone - there are THREE Friends of Israel Groups.
What was that about leveraging access?
It is patently ridiculous to have such a huge number of groups dedicated to a single relationship ostensibly for relations with such a small % of the Australian population - therefore the focus must logically be on the state of Israel itself.
This is inappropriate on so many levels - not least of which noting that Israel is just a minor economic partner with Australia and certainly not an ally.
Appendix B: Australia’s United Nations voting record and the timing of attacks
There is a correlation between the timing and sequencing of the spike in antisemitic attacks in Australia in relation to Australia’s voting pattern at the UN in the latter quarter of 2024. This was actually specifically pointed out by Israel’s PM Netanyahu as a clear indicator of his natural slant for political expediency.
It should be noted that for 20 years Australia had either voted with the US on matters of Israel or abstained - even if the Australian Government of the day had made matters of policy related to Israel that could be viewed negatively..
July 19 2024: Under a case brought before October 7th, the ICJ rules that Israel’s occupation of Palestine is illegal under international law. Amongst other measures, they advise that Israel must withdraw and that the legal ruling be passed to the Secretary-General to determine next steps to implement39.
Sep 19 2024: The United Nations takes a vote on the recommendations in the ICJ ruling. This is under the General Assembly under the “Uniting for Peace” Charter provision since in the UN Security Council the US would veto anything with any negative impact on Israel, even after their behaviour in Gaza.
The motion is passed 124-14 and amongst other resolutions - gives a target date for Israel to withdraw from the occupied territories - within 1 year (19 Sep 2025 - the clock is ticking).
Australia again abstains.
Nov 14 2024: At a United Nations Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Commmittee (“Third Committee” - not main floor of the UN but a subcommittee) vote there is a motion reaffirming the right of the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and a state.
This should not be controversial but again Australia was expected to follow the US lead and abstain from voting. But it did not.
Australia indicated a shift in position by voting for the motion - overwhelmingly passed 170-6. Even in a committee stage this caused great consternation at Australia’s shift in position.
Dec 4 2024: On the main floor - the main motion is presented.
Australia votes FOR the motion. Notably not an abstention following Israel and the US lead for the first time in 20 years in a vote on the main floor.
The fact that Australia was expected to abstain - effectively voting with the US and Israel - would have been a huge outlier. In particular with the unusually low number of abstentions and the tiny countries voting with the US and Israel (admittedly Argentina).
This even included Germany with it’s special staatsräson obligation to Israel and the other members of the “Five Eyes” intelligence sharing countries (New Zealand, Canada, UK).
The vote was passed 157-8.
Israel expressed fury at Australia’s vote and in Australia the pro-Israel lobby and the Israeli Ambassador to Australia expressed the same sentiment.40
Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu made angry appeals at the time and later the Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister actually directly criticised the slow pace of the NSW Police investigation into antisemitism whilst harking back to Australia’s vote in the UN.
This is the same Deputy Foreign Minister who a few months later in March 2025 covertly filmed a UK MP visiting the Knesset and posted footage of her dissenting comments edited and out of context on social media.41
Back at the time of Australia’s UN vote Netanyahu’s words were prophetic - “Australia is inviting terrorism”.42
And the very next day ….
Dec 5 2024: The caravan is towed into place in NSW and left at the side of the road at that point undiscovered.
Dec 6 2024: The most serious attack occurs - the firebombing at the Adass Synagogue in Melbourne, home to a progressive Jewish sect who are not particularly pro-Israel.43
Netanyahu steps in again and personally condemns the attack - and after the earlier warning on terror just two days previous, unconscionably actually attempts to directly link the firebombing to Australia’s vote at the United Nations which is rejected by the Australian Prime Minister.44
“Unfortunately, it is impossible to separate this reprehensible act from the extreme anti-Israeli position of the Labor government in Australia…
including the scandalous decision to support the UN resolution calling on Israel 'to bring an end to its unlawful presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, as rapidly as possible', and preventing a former Israeli minister from entering the country”
Tellingly Netanyahu added to spell it out:
"Anti-Israel sentiment is anti-Semitism."
Rupert Murdoch owner of the huge pro-Israel global News Corporation network - later personally visited the Adass synagogue site on 12th December in a highly unusual public appearance.
Dec 7 2024: The caravan is discovered and towed onto the property in Dural - to be reported to police almost six weeks later.
Regarding the caravan … and the subsequent hoax.
You have to admire a gang of petty criminals being able to read the complex geopolitical situation and choose the best way to exact their individual extorting activities with the advantages for the pro-Israel lobby being a pure by-product.
Right.
Appeasement
Dec 2 2025: NSW Police form Strike Force Pearl dedicated to addressing antisemitic crime in the State.
Dec 8 2025: The Prime Minster visits the Adass Synagogue and is heckled by crowds. He also announces another $32.5M Federal funding grant to ECAJ on top of almost $75M received since Oct 13 2023.
Dec 9 2025: Under intense pressure - domestically from Dutton, Murdoch Media and international criticism for Netanyahu the Prime Minister holds a Press Conference. ASIO declares the Adass attack as terrorism and Albanese announces the formation of an Australian Federal police “Operation Avalite”45 to investigate46.
Dec 11 2025: The Prime Minister in Sydney announces another $8.5M funding to redevelop the Sydney Jewish Museum.
Jan 14 2025: Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus makes a visit to Israel to “mend relationships” with the Israeli Government47. This is in relation to Netanyahu’s furious response to Australia voting for a Palestine State at the UN in December in particular linking to and criticising the antisemitic attacks in Australia and warning of terror. Just before those attacks occurred.
Notably our highest legal official is visiting the country where the Prime Minister has an active arrest warrant for him on the accusation of crimes against humanity issued by the International Criminal Court48. Australia is a signatory of the Rome Statute of the ICC and is bound to assist in the arrest. Dreyfus might not slam the cuffs on in the Knesset - but in principle inappropriate.
Furthermore - Israel is in the middle of a massacre of Gazans, mostly civilians with a plausible case to prove genocide going ahead at the International Court of Justice49. The Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention and Human Security - named after the Polish-Jewish lawyer and holocaust survivor who coined the term “genocide” - has called Israel’s crimes a genocide (also in the West Bank) as one of multiple organisations to do so50.
Again - is Dreyfus’s visit appropriate?
More likely is the November 5th election result in the US with President-Elect Trump to be inaugurated at the end of the week with the most pro-Israeli cabinet on record. Those in Israel’s favour will be in Trump’s favour.
Appendix C: Government community funding and support summary
This article notes the March pre-election pledges from Labor and the Liberals in this article for rebuilding the Adass Synagogue of around $31-35M (depending who wins election) - despite the building being insured, $2.2M raised over the insurance already and hefty corporate backing to the appeal.
So what is the taxpayer money for? Does a building cost what $50M? Shouldn’t insurance and replacement budget as for the rest of us cover like-for-like?
On top of this, noting earlier grants to the community.
18 Oct 2023: $25M grant for securing places of worship - 50% of the fund for all faith-based places of worship across Australia allocated to ECAJ (presumably for Jewish places of worship)51
8 Jan 2024: $63.2M grant under the enhancing security for Jewish communities program (unsure if this is the same program as the October $25M in which case it’s a variance of more than double $38.2M to the $63.2M).52
The grant notes “a focus on Jewish places of worship, schools and pre-schools” - but also includes “security infrastructure including an estimated four CCTV cameras, one security and alarm system and one intercom/swipe access system at the Executive Council of Australian Jewry premises in Woolloomooloo, New South Wales”.8 Dec 2024: $32.5M grant additionally to ECAJ for security announced directly after the Adass synagogue attack.53
11 Dec 2024: $8.5M grant to redevelop the Sydney Jewish Museum54.
So this is $104.2M - $129.2M community project funding for ECAJ and associated communities from Oct 13 2023 to 11 Dec 2024.
And this is just Federal project funding. There has been State project funding and grants on top of that.
And that doesn’t include individual benefit payments. There have also been Federal, State and even Council55 individual benefit payments offered for those traumatised by events but only those on October 7th and only those with relatives in Israel.
Overall there has been a real disparity in the support for the Jewish community and the Muslim community in Australia and vast gap in funding.
In July 2024 the Government appointed an antisemitism envoy with a large department and budget. Notably the appointee Jillian Segal is an extremely biased pro-Israel ex-President of ECAJ.
The Jewish Council of Australia called out her bias - but also the dangers of exceptionalism and consistently treating antisemitism separately.56
Which is clearly the case.
