Introduction
In the last few weeks documentary film maker Louis Theroux released “Settlers” in which he revisited a group of illegal Israeli settlers 14 years after his initial interview with them.
There was shock at the mindset and approach of these individuals - but little surprise from those already aware of their activity and countless other settlers like them over decades.
Like Gaza, over the situation on the ground - the international enablers must be looked at. Who is platforming, supporting and normalising their behaviour?
This article looks at one such extremist pro-Israel group in Australia who have platformed, fundraised for and hosted events with the Israeli extremist settler organisation Nachala shown in Theroux’s documentary1.
At the same time - the notorious Australian organisation claims to “take no position on the matter” - and yet comments and their platforming would suggest otherwise.

PART 1: Before October 7th
The following section summarises publicised events organised with Nachala before October 7th.
1. Hosting Nachala in-person in Australia: 2022
July: Announcing Nachala’s push for new settlements2 and noting they would soon be hosting International Development Director Lita Slonim in Australia3.
August: Hosted Nachala settler movement in-person in Sydney on a publicity tour and fundraiser supporting illegal settlement building4.
August report from fundraiser (written article by new CEO Robert Gregory)5. Slonim noted that pro-Israel supporters:
“from around the world, including some in Australia, are involved in purchasing land across Judea and Samaria. The Nachala movement has a goal of purchasing millions of acres of land in order to safeguard it for the Jewish people.”
2. Australian tax advantages for assets in the occupied territories
It is clear that platforming such as these events “normalise” Nachala’s activities, fundraise for the organisation itself in addition to raising awareness of potential investment opportunities in the illegally occupied Palestinian territories in the West Bank6.
In 2019 under Scott Morrison’s Government an extensive tax treaty was signed with the Israeli Government. Part of this effectively meant that double-tax status was removed for income generated or assets held in the occupied territories. This was implemented under staunch pro-Israel advocate Treasurer Josh Frydenberg.
It is noted that close Government pro-Israel lobbying contact Mark Leibler of AIJAC et al in his professional capacity is a corporate lawyer and international tax expert. Not that there is any evidence Leibler was involved, it would be interesting to see who the disclosed external Government advisers for this treaty were and how they were selected.
Notably the Scott Morrison Government was the most pro-Israel Government in history with so many deals taking place with Israel that the pro-Israel lobby opened a permanent office in Canberra in 20187.
Treasurer Josh Frydenberg who oversaw the implementation of the tax treaty in 2019 continued to enjoy a close relationship with the pro-Israel lobby continuing a pattern over many years. Currently Frydenberg is a patron of the Victorian Liberal Parliamentary Friends of Israel organisation (see Appendix A: Former Treasurer Josh Frydenberg: links with pro-Israel lobby for more details).
Fast-forward to 2024 and with the Gaza crisis unfolding and the focus on Israel’s broader illegal activities in the Occupied Territories.
The tax advantages for Australians investing in the Occupied Territories were picked up on by Australian Federal Labor MP Julian Hill in January 20248.
In March 2024 Hill wrote to the ATO demanding an explanation:
Valid questions - to ensure Australia in no way complicit in Australia’s settlement regime. As Hill notes - this includes questions on the tax status of donations to organisations involved in illegal settler activities such as Nachala.
It is unclear what the ATO response was.
3. April 2023 continuing to showcase Nachala
PART 2: After October 7th
The AJA stepped up connection with extremist groups in Israel after October 7th.
4. Congratulates extremist group in live interview as they block aid for Gaza (Jan 2024)
This should shock anyone.
In January 2024 the AJA hosted a “special live broadcast” in which they interviewed a representative of extremist settler group Tzav 99.
The Tsav 9 leader was proudly declaring they were blocking humanitarian supplies for Gaza and was congratulated by the AJA host and also by the organisation in a comment on the video.
The AJA host was interviewing French-Israeli leader of Tzav9 Rachel Touitoi who oversaw “operations” from January 2024 blockading aid into Gaza, tearing apart and emptying food bound for the starving in front of the world’s press10.
Glorified live in this broadcast.
Of course - fast forward one year and emboldened with Trump’s support, the Government does it for Tzav9.
Update: In November 2024 the French anti-terrorist prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation into Franco-Israelians for complicity in genocide, incitement to genocide and complicity in crimes against humanity in Gaza11. That includes in particular Rachel Toitou that the AJA made a point of interviewing.
The case is ongoing but does complicity extend to those in other countries showcasing the brutal actions of those blocking food from starving people?
5. Resettling Gaza - hosting Nachala for live Zoom call (April 2024)
In Australia the AJA hosted a Zoom call “should Jews be allowed to resettle Gaza?” in April 2024 with Daniella Weiss - head of Nachala, the key subject of Louis Theroux’s April 2025 documentary12.
It should be noted that as with all pro-Israel organisations the whole global Jewish religion is conflated with the domestic actions of Israelis in Israel. The title should of course be “should Israelis be allowed to resettle Gaza”.
The argument from this movement was - the whole of Israel must be settled and the Arabs removed. And the “new sell” for settlement unconscionably leveraging the horror of October 7th and subsequent slaughter of Gazans from the April 2024 call was:
In the webinar, Weiss and Slonim celebrate the “Resettle Gaza” conference that Nachala had organised a few months prior in January 202413 which was attended by 6,000 people including 1/3rd of the Israeli Cabinet14.
Weiss played a video from the conference during which she said “only the people of Israel can settle the Gaza Strip… and rule the Gaza Strip!”
The video featured a selection of speakers with calls for settlement from Government Ministers:
However - words from a broader selection of speakers revealed the true nature of the settlers goal - settling all of the occupied territories.
The group talk to their modus operandi giving the example of the community of Evyatar:
move into an area and illegally occupy with basic setup
publicise as quickly as possible - get in hundreds of thousands of other settlers to visit and host events, inviting right-wing Government politicians - to give some sort of creedence to the illegal settlement
move in further infrastructure over time
build more permanent structures
pressure the Government into “recognising” an illegal settlement and formalising military protection and IDF supporting infrastructure
Government eventually capitulates and recognises the settlement (whatever that means under international law)
Other follow up presentations from the AJA that year included:
6. April 2025: The Pommie
A mild mannered guy from England drops a point-and-shoot documentary about the settlers of Nachala …. and THEN the whole world takes notice….
…. and noticing the long-standing connection between Nachala and Australian Pro-Israel groups.
7. Conclusion
Following Trump’s victory he made outrageous claims of redeveloping Gaza’s beachfront into “the Riviera of the Middle East” for the people’s of the world sharing an outrageous AI video of Gaza.
This in fact reveals a disturbing parallel between Trump’s almost manic approach and the modus operandi of the Nachala settlers.
Make an outrageous statement or move, get it in the public eye and narrative, repeat… and eventually you will get what you want.
Bearing in mind the Australian Zoom call was a year ago in April 2024 the approach compared to Trump’s narrative sounds chillingly measured - which is what came out in Theroux’s documentary which did not mention Trump once (unclear when this was filmed).
During the video itself Slonim says “we have learned from history … it is a Zionist method…” and Weiss says “yes, tried and tested with great success” - and appears to give a little wink.
Telling indeed.
Epilogue: After the Australian Election
On Saturday May 3rd the Australian Federal Election was called within 2 hours for Labor.
It was one of the biggest Labor victories in history - and an utter defeat for the Liberal/National Coalition who had worked closely with the pro-Israel lobby to campaign hard against Labor.
Just four days before the AJA announced a leadership transition and the new CEO (who hosted the AJA/Nachala call) issued a statement15.
The last sentence is interesting:
“AJA will continue to hold the Albanese Government to account”
Which begs the question - who will hold these "charity status” Israel state lobby groups to account?
Appendix A: Former Treasurer Josh Frydenberg: links with pro-Israel lobby
Treasurer Josh Frydenberg who oversaw the implementation of the tax treaty with Israel in 2019 continued to enjoy a close relationship with the pro-Israel lobby continuing a pattern over many years. Currently Frydenberg is a patron of the Victorian Liberal Parliamentary Friends of Israel organisation
Another recent client of Arnold Bloch Leibler receiving pro-bono legal support was former Opposition leader Peter Dutton16 who lost his seat in the 2025 Australian Federal Election.
Dutton was a staunch pro-Israel candidate and like Frydenberg had a long connection with the lobby. In the first quarter of 2025 he made some quite stunning commitments to the pro-Israel lobby should he be elected in the midst of a hoax antisemitism scandal by criminals paid by overseas actors.
